Liver spot on the skin of an old personTo quote from an informative article on age spots in Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia…

Liver spots (also known as “solar lentigo,” “lentigo senilis,” “old age spot,” “senile freckle”) are blemishes on the skin associated with aging and exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

“They range in color from light brown to red or black.

They are located in areas most often exposed to the sun, particularly the hands, face, shoulders, arms and forehead, and the scalp if bald.”

“The age spots derive their name from the fact that they were once incorrectly believed to be caused by liver problems, but they are physiologically unrelated to the liver, save for a similar color. From the age of 40 onward, the skin is less able to regenerate from sun exposure, and liver spots are very common in this age group, particularly in those who spend time in the sun.

“In the vast majority of cases, liver spots pose no threat and require no treatment, though they occasionally have been known to obscure the detection of skin cancer. However, despite being a benign condition, liver spots are sometimes considered unsightly and some people choose to have them removed. This can be done by electrosurgery, laser treatment or cryotherapy.”

Home Remedies?
lemon slicesAloe Vera, lemon juice, lemon slices, apple cider vinegar and onions, Vitamin E and other ingredients have long been used, either singly or in various combinations, by people attempting to lighten up several things, such as freckles and even hair.

But some people can get allergic reactions to these ingredients, so always use caution.

“Try putting lemon slices or juice over your age spots every few hours. The juice might help bleach the skin to a lighter color [source: Hamptonian]. Similarly, you also could try laying slices of potato on your spots to see if it helps.”

As always, consult a physician if you think you have a potentially dangerous skin problem.

“Well I have been using the cream every day for 2 years now and have not had Impetigo since, plus my age spots and blemishes have drastically faded, and my skin tone is better. I also use it on my hands after a heavy day of house cleaning or painting – you know the rough chapped hands.

I recommend the Corium 21 cream to others who I think need to give it a try.”
